Lorenzo Musetti v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Challenger level in 2019 and Safiullin defeated Musetti in straight sets.

Musetti Crushes Rinderknech

Arthur Rinderknech was expected to give Musetti a run for his money but the Italian top 20 player came through without any trouble to seal his semifinal berth.

Musetti, who had earlier struggled to get going against Philip Sekulic in his opening round match, registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Rinderknech.

In the lead-up to this tournament, Musetti got off to consistent starts in each of his previous eight tournaments before stumbling to two defeats from three matches at the Cincinnati Masters and US Open.

Which is why, back to back victories here at Chengdu gets Musetti his rhythm back and makes him a player to watch going into the rest of the tournament. That being said he is also coming up against someone who has done well enough in recent times to not be a runaway underdog.

Musetti starts at 10/11 with bet365 to win this.

Safiullin Benefits from Thompson’s Injury

In a match that lasted just a set, Safiullin was leading Jordan Thompson on winning the tie-breaker when his opponent retired from the encounter.

As a result, Safiullin entered the semifinal by clinching three successive victories in a tournament, continuing his good form that had seen him make it to the Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Here, he stunned Brandon Nakashima in the first round in straight sets and then overcame Dan Evans in the second – both times having gone in as the underdog.

Having hit a season-low of 113th this season, Safiullin’s performance at Wimbledon had helped him garner enough points to cruise to a career-best of 43rd in by mid-July. A recent loss in some of his form has pulled him back to 55th but he will be back in the top 50 by next week.

A win here will take him into the top 40 of the rankings and he is 10/11 with bet365 to do that.

Musetti v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Nothing between these two but Safiullin could hold a very teeny-weeny edge here and at 10/11 those odds look to be something to back.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Safiullin to win: 10/11 (with bet365)
