Kalinina is mid-way through her most successful season to date, having reached a new career high of world no.25 back in May. The highlight of which is a run to the final at the WTA 1000 Italian Open, where unfortunately she retired injured after the first set.
Her form over the last couple of months does seem to have dipped. It’s been a mixture of first and second round appearances, with no standout wins along the way.
In her two prior events in San Diego and Guadalajara, she made the second round in both but then came unstuck against Krejcikova and Kenin respectively. She did however beat Pliskova in the first round at one of these tournaments; a victory which shouldn’t be overlooked and was a good hard-court performance.
She comes into this match a marginal favourite with odds at 4/5 (with bet365). This may seem appealingly good odds but if Kalinina doesn’t find her best level, an upset could be on the cards.

Krueger Won her Maiden Tour Title Last Week
The 19-year-old American has rocketed up the rankings and looks to be another promising young prospectWinning her maiden WTA title just 7 days ago at the Japan Open Tennis Championships, it’s clear she is playing well. In the final, she defeated the top seed and world no.31, Lin Zhu: 6-3, 7-6(6).
Whilst this title is a great achievement, Kalinina is a level above these opponents. In fact, because Krueger hasn’t made it into many main draws, Kalinina will be the second highest ranked player that she has faced all year. However, this won’t daunt her, as she crushed Azarenka 6-3,6-2, on grass earlier this year.
Despite technically going through the qualifiers for this tournament, Krueger hasn’t had to play a qualifying match. She had a bye in the first round and wasn’t required to play her second round match to make it through to the main draw. Thus, she should have had time to recover and prepare ahead of this upcoming match.
It may be another step-up for the young American, but full of confidence and clearly comfortably on the Japanese hard courts, a victory here is well within reach.

At a quick glance, Kalinina may seem the obvious winner, however there’s a realistic chance of Krueger emerging victorious. I anticipate a close contest that could easily go to three sets.
