Kawaguchi Makes it Through the Qualifiers

It would be a sense of relief for local player Kawaguchi to have made it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw of this competition. That’s because the 388th-ranked player had been forced to feature on the ITF circuit where she had struggled to make it count in recent times.

Having begun the season with three ITF titles, Kawaguchi’s recent form had suddenly taken a nose-dive.

In the lead-up to this tournament, Kawaguchi had lost six matches in a row, including five in the first round of ITF competitions, leading to question-marks over her sudden rise in form. Because only slightly prior to that, Kawaguchi had jumped up the rankings charts from being 767th in April to a career-best of 372nd.

Can she carry on from her qualifiers and overcome a fellow qualifier here. Kawaguchi isn’t quite the favourite though with bet365 offering 9/5 for her win.

Papamichail Hoping to Better Recent Record

Before the start of this competition, Papamichail had played in 16 WTA tournaments including the WTA 125 events and had failed to win even a single main draw encounter.

More recently, she was ousted in the US Open qualifiers, and then failed to make it to the main draw of the Osaka Open as well. And while Papamichail overcame her qualifying opponents, Maia Lumsden and Yexin Ma in Guangzhou, she was sent packing in the first round there.

Which is why when Papamichail won both her qualifiers here and then drew a player ranked so low on the charts, it would have given her renewed hope that she has a chance. A chance for a rare win at the highest level, something she had last done at the United Cup.

Papamichail will start off a 2/5 favourite (with bet365) in this one.

Kawaguchi v Papamichail Prediction and Tip

Papamichail might start off as a favourite but Kawaguchi will not be a pushover in home conditions and we could be looking at an upset result here.
