Petra Martic v Misaki Doi Head to Head

It’s 1-1 on head to head. Doi had beaten Martic in their first meeting back in 2013 before the Croat got revenge in 2020 at the French Open.

Martic Returns after US Open Ouster

A quarterfinalist in this tournament last season, Martic has returned here on the back of some interesting displays of tennis.

Since making it to the quarterfinal at the Eastbourne International in June having started out as a qualifier there, Martic has played in 10 matches at the highest level. And she has a 5-5 win-loss record.

This includes three successive second round exits, having lost to Aryna Sabalenka at Montreal, Karolina Muchova at Cincinnati and Marie Bouzkova at the US Open. And she now returns to competitive tennis following a break of over three weeks as she looks to end the season on a high.

Martic had earlier hit a season-high ranking of 27th in the world but despite her recent record, she was ranked 49th before the start of this tournament – her lowest for the season. Can she find herself a reasonable showing in this tournament as she starts off a 1/7 favourite (with bet365) in this opener?

Doi Forced to Come Through the Qualifier

Doi is a former top-30 player. She has two WTA titles under her belt. And to top it all, she is a local here.

And yet there was no wildcard for her, underlining how badly she has fallen off the grid. And off the rankings charts.

Because even after kick-starting the season at a rather low ranking of 172nd in the world, she has done nothing to maintain that much. Her slide to outside the top 300 came in January itself and since then Doi has struggled to do too much of note.

The former Japanese number one has been forced to feature on the ITF circuit as a result and even there, her results have been anything but consistent. In all but one of the seven ITF tournaments she’s played before last week’s Osaka Open, Doi failed to win more than one match.

And with a first round defeat in Osaka, it is no surprise she starts out a 9/2 underdog with bet365 to surprise Martic.

Martic v Doi Prediction and Tip

Martic is a favourite here to win in straight sets and we will be betting on that outcome for this opener.
