Alexander Zverev v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came at the 2021 French Open and it was Zverev who had won that in straight sets.

Zverev Overcomes Dimitrov Yet Again

Zverev’s record against Grigor Dimitrov is one of the best he has against any player and there was no deviation from that norm when the two faced off in the semifinal of the Chengdu Open.

While Dimitrov did manage to put up a fight and stretched the encounter to an hour and 52 minutes, in the end it was Zverev who came through in straight sets. The German clinched his place in the final with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over his Bulgarian opponent.

Having been stretched to three sets in each of his previous two encounters by Pavel Kotov and Miomir Kecmanovic, Zverev avoided the same fate in two ways. For starters he faced five break-points but saved them all.

And secondly despite not breaking Dimitrov in the second set, he made a strong start to the tie-breaker that followed to finish the match in two sets.

Coming up against Safiullin, Zverev will be a whopping 1/3 favourite with bet365 as he looks to maintain his spot in the top 10 of the rankings. More vitally, by winning the semifinal, he also skipped over to the seventh spot in the Race to Turin rankings.

Safiullin Sends Musetti Away

Ranked 113th early in March this season, Safiullin had taken a huge leap on the ATP Rankings chart when he jumped up to 43rd, his career-best showing, in July. That had been thanks to his quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon.

He was obviously unable to maintain that same kind of form in the three tournaments that followed and his ranking fell a bit to 55th in the lead-up to this competition in Chengdu.

Now, following his semifinal thrashing of Lorenzo Musetti, Safiullin sits on a new career-high ranking irrespective of the result of this final. He will be one spot away from entering the top 40 for the first time in his career and that has been thanks to his performances in this tournament.

After having shocked Brandon Nakashima in the first round, Safiullin overcame Dan Evans in the second before Jordan Thompson retired from the second set of their quarterfinal. And in the semifinal, Safiullin has managed to brush Musetti aside 6-3, 6-4.

Safiullin now faces a rather difficult opponent in Zverev which makes him a rank outsider at 12/5 (with bet365) to win this.

Zverev v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Safiullin might be a second favourite here but he won’t be an easy nut to crack and might even take a set off Zverev given the kind of form he has shown all tournament.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Safiullin to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
