Spread across the Davis Cup, Challengers, qualifiers and the main draw of the tournaments at the highest level, Zapata Miralles has featured in 50 competitive matches this season and won and lost 25 apiece.
The challenge lies in how well has he done outside of clay. And the answer to that question is not too well. Because 23 of those 25 wins have come on red dirt even as he’s 2-11 on other surfaces.
Both of those wins in non-clay competitions have come recently – at the US Open he overcame Ethan Quinn to make the second round before winning a match in the Davis Cup against Tomas Machac.
Zapata Miralles now returns to the season-ending hardcourt and indoor hardcourt competitions knowing fully well that things might not quite go his way here. He will hope to clinch a few wins here and in the rest of the season to help him maintain a top-75 ranking before the start of the new season.

Gerasimov Registers Two Shocks in a Row
Only about two weeks ago, Gerasimov was playing on the Futures circuit. The former world number 65 has fallen to outside of the top 650 and wins on the lower circuit too have been difficult to come by.
Last week at the Chengdu Open qualifiers, he had fallen in the first round too, losing to Evgeny Donskoy.
This time around, Gerasimov came in as a 2/1 underdog in both his qualifying rounds – against Zizou Bergs and Alexandre Muller. In both those matches, he might have had to work hard but Gerasimov found a way to register straight-set wins.
What that means is that Gerasimov will now be playing his first ever main draw match of the season. The last time he appeared at this level was in Munich in April 2022.
And while he doesn’t quite start the favourite with bet365 offering 3/1 for his win, he will consider the possibility that he has a chance against a player who has had his issues outside of clay.
