Daria Kasatkina v Despina Papamichail Head to Head

More than nine years ago these two had met in the ITF circuit and it was Kasatkina who had come through in straight sets in that match. Not sure that counts for too much all these years later.

Kasatkina Makes a Comeback Win over Kostyuk

Marta Kostyuk is known to be a tricky opponent but she had entered this tournament on the back of very few wins going her way in recent times. Which is why Kasatkina was an 11/20 favourite  (with 888Sport) entering her opening round match against Kostyuk.

That’s not how the match started though with Kostyuk coming out all guns blazing and breaking her opponent once in the first set and three more times in the second.

With Kasatkina a set down and having failed to hold on to her serve in the first six games of the second, it looked like Kostyuk held the upper hand.

It was finally in the seventh game that Kasatkina managed a hold before breaking Kostyuk twice to level the proceedings. The decider was not a lot different with the two trading serves on four occasions before the Russian managed a third of the set in the eighth game. She soon served it out.

What Kasatkina will definitely hope for is to do better in the second round than lose her serve the seven times she did in the previous round.

Papamichail Scrapes Past Hosogi

Facing off against lucky loser Sakura Hosogi, Papamichail was forced to huff and puff to a win in her opener. In a match lasting two hours and 24 minutes, Papamichail won 7-6 (3), 7-5 to make it to the second round.

Papamichail lost her serve four times in the encounter but was able to squeak through to a win by getting past Hosogi’s serve on five occasions.

At one stage, Hosogi served for 32 in the first set before Papamichail came into her own and broke back twice. She had three set-points which she missed and a further one more in the tie-breaker before claiming the win off her fifth.

In the second set, Papamichail had a chance to serve it out at 5-4 but missed only to get another chance at 6-5 when she finally won.

Papamichail will be a distant second favourite at 3/1 (with bet365) to win this encounter

Kasatkina v Papamichail Prediction and Tip

Backing Kasatkina to clinch this in straight sets against a player struggling for form and rhythm in round one against a player ranked ranked outside the top 250.
