Shang Hoping to Surprise

Shang is a very talented player who hopes to become one of the best players in the world in the future. The requirements are certainly there, but it remains to be seen how he handles this transitionary period. Many talents kind of fade away during that time, but first impressions have been good.

The Chinese player has a 31-20 record this year including a 21-12 split on hard courts. He’s played some pretty solid tennis lately, even though his last two outings were that great. He’s a young player, so his form going up and down is hardly surprising.

This match, though will present him with a unique opportunity. He’ll play a tired player who had a very long week in Zhuhai and not enough time to rest up with a 3-hour flight from Zhuhai to Beijing.

That’s a pretty good chance for an upset on home soil.

Nishioka Shining in Zhuhai

While writing this preview, Nishioka is playing the Zhuhai Open final against Karen Khachanov. He’s been really strong this entire week, which is why he’s in the final, and it’s good to see, as he struggled greatly with his tennis this year.

Nishioka looked really strong at this time of the year last year, looking like a Top 30 player. He didn’t quite live up to that this year, holding an 18-17 record, which includes a couple of wins this week in Zhuhai.

Still, a breakthrough in the Chinese city should be a good enough boost for him in the upcoming weeks. The short turnaround is less than ideal, which will be a factor in this matchup if it takes place. Nishioka might even withdraw but let’s assume he plays.

He’s going to be tired and fatigued, and that’s a great chance for his opponent to get the win. Even without that, this matchup looks awfully close, considering how the Japanese player played this year.

Shang v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

I’m actually going to go with the upset here but remember that it would be an upset. Choose any combination of Shang winning a set, him winning outright or just a handicap of games.
