Casper Ruud v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Struff has a perfect 3-0 record against Ruud. The German won in Monte-Carlo in 2017 and this year and also won at the US Open in 2019. Interestingly, Struff has not dropped a set against Ruud.

Ruud Has Struggled on Hard Courts This Year

World no. 9 Casper Ruud hasn’t had the same sort of impact that he had over the last two years. Part of the reason has been his inability to go deep in hard court tournaments.

A US Open finalist last year, Ruud is yet to win consecutive matches on hard court in 2023. The Norwegian is 31-18 overall, which includes a solid 22-8 run on clay. But outside the surface that has been the most productive for him over the years, Ruud has simply found the going tough.

He is 7-9 on hard courts and given his poor form in recent times, the former world no. 2 has fallen to no. 9 in the rankings.

Most recently Ruud was seen in action at the Laver Cup where he won his singles match against Tommy Paul.

Can Ruud draw inspiration from that win and make a winning start?

Struff In Fine Form

When the year started, Jan-lennard Struff was ranked no. 150th in the world. However, thanks to host of astonishing performances, the German climbed up consistently, reaching a career-high of no. 21 in June.

Currently ranked no. 23, Struff is 17-11 at the tour level and 42-18 overall this season. His best performance came in Madrid, when he reached his first ever ATP 1000 final, only to fall to Carlos Alcaraz.

The 33-year-old also made it to the final in Stuttgart, but went down fighting against Frances Tiafoe.

So far Struff has played in three ATP finals and has lost all three of them. This year, he was brilliant during the middle phase, but a hip injury forced him to miss the Wimbledon and the US Open. He returned to action in Zhuhai last week and went on to reach the quarterfinal after winning the round of 16 contest.

Can he make a solid start at the China Open?

Casper Ruud v Jan-Lennard Struff Prediction and Tip

Ruud has never beaten Struff; he has not even won a set against the German; and has struggled on hard courts. So it will be an extremely tough opener for the Norwegian. But he is the superior player and will use all his experience to end Struff’s perfect record against him.
