Griekspoor did win two of his three Davis Cup singles matches two weeks ago but his performances on the ATP circuit before that left a lot to desire.
The Dutchman hit a career-best ranking of 26th in the world when he made the final of the Washington Open in August and would soon jump two spots to 24th but the results since then haven’t gone his way.
At the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters, Griekspoor was dumped out in the very first round and then forced to play at the Winston-Salem Open, he made the second round thanks to Jack Draper’s retirement.
Griekspoor went in as the world number 24 at the US Open but lost to Arthur Fils in the very first round, making it five defeats from his previous six matches. The Davis Cup results should be a bit of a relief but his true test will be here.

Shimabukuro Eases Past Carballes Baena
Roberto Carballes Baena is known for his performances on clay but has usually struggled to get going even on that surface before this season. He looked to have turned things around this year but as far as hardcourt competitions are concerned, there were still question-marks over his chances.
And that’s why despite starting out a 11/10 underdog with bet365, Shimabukuro was able to come a winner in their opening round encounter.
Having entered the tournament on the back of successive three-set wins in the qualifiers, Shimabukuro crushed Carballes Baena 6-2, 6-4 to register the third top level win of his career. This was also his first victory in the main draw of an ATP tournament with the other two having come in the Davis Cup.
It would also give him a lot of confidence now that he comes up against a player who has had a few struggles in recent times. He does start off a 33/10 underdog here which looks to be a tempting one to go for if one is willing to take that chance.
