Alexander Zverev v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Zverev leads 3-1 on head to head. While Zverev won their third meetings at the US Open, Cologne Open and French Open, it was Fokina who defeated his German opponent in their most recent outing in Toronto earlier this year.

Zverev Needs Three Sets against Schwartzman

It was a first round match between two players showing sharply contrasting forms.

On the one hand, Zverev has had a season to remember immediately following one in which he was out of action for six months. On the other, Diego Schwartzman has probably had the worst year of his competitive career and struggled to win even on his most preferred clay court surface.

Which is why this opening round match between these two players was expected to be a mismatch so bad that Zverev had entered the encounter as a 1/9 favourite with bet365.

Instead it turned out to be a gritty battle in which Zverev needed three sets to usurp his Argentine opponent. In a match lasting two hours and 27 minutes, Zverev was finally able to eke out a 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4 win over Schwartzman to seal his round two berth.

What remains to be seen is if Zverev can shrug off this performance and get back to his best come the second round as he starts off a 1/3 favourite here (at bet365).

Fokina Remains Untested by Yi

Yi Zhou has never been ranked better than 893rd in the world and till about a month or so ago was playing on the Futures circuit. And even at level, Yi hadn’t won a tournament.

Which is why it was no surprise that Fokina had entered their second round encounter as a 1/33 favourite and he lived up to those odds with an easy opening round win. In a match that went on for a mere 70 minutes, Fokina carved out a 6-2, 6-2 win over Yi to set up his meeting with Zverev.

Fokina was broken once in the encounter though but by then he was already a set and a break up. He retaliated with a break back before sealing off the encounter with a fifth break of serve of the encounter.

This was Fokina’s first ATP match since his third round exit at the US Open and he will now hope to bring out his A game against an opponent whom he had defeated as recently as last month. Still, he is a second favourite at 23/10 (with bet365) to overcome his opponent here.

Zverev v Fokina Prediction and Tip

Backing Zverev to find his touch and clinch a win but it could go to a tough two-setter or even see a third set.
