Mayar Sherif has had a breakout year in 2023, sure, but most of her successes have been down to her performances on clay.
Which is why not too many expected her to do too much of note in this opener against Kasatkina, who is ranked 25 spots ahead of her.
A stunning performance in the first set and a comeback from a break down in the set to level out at 4-4 meant that Sherif looked more confident of the two players. Kasatkina earned a late break in the second set to level the proceedings but that still didn’t turn things around for her fully.
Because Sherif broke Kasatkina in the fifth game of the decider and had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4.
Kasatkina broke back in the 10th game and then raced to a 6-3 lead in the tie-breaker. She went on to squander three match-points from there, then saved one, gave up one more before winning it off her fifth.
She will hope to do a lot better against the home favourite in the second round.

Xinyu Eases Through Her Opener
While Vera Zvonareva is a fading veteran who has shown fight at the highest level, she was never expected to challenge a top 40 player in Wang. And in the end, Wang lived up to her 3/10 winning odds as she clinched a straight-set win over Zvonareva to set up this meeting with Kasatkina.
In a match lasting an hour and 34 minutes, Xinyu won 6-4, 6-3 to move into the second round of her home WTA 1000 event.
It was the in-form Wang who broke first, going 4-2 up but that began a chain of five successive breaks of serves which ended with the Chinese player grabbing the first set.
Just one break of serve separated the two players in the second set with Xinyu clinching it in the second game. Wang frittered away a couple of match-points on her own serve but went on to grab the win off the third.
