Sebastian Ofner v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head
This will be a first tour level meeting between the two 27-year-olds.
However, they met once in a qualifying round at Roland Garros in 2021 and that match was won by Varillas in three sets.

Ofner Making Masters Debut
As we were writing the preview, Sebastian Ofner was preparing to play in the semifinals of the Astana Open.
The Austrian had beaten Marton Fucsovics and Aleander Bublik in the first two rounds respectively and then rallied from a set down to beat compatriot Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinal.
A win over Adrian Mannarino in the semifinal on Monday, would take him into a first ever ATP final.
Ofner, who also made his fourth round debut at a major this year in Roland Garros, is 9-8 at the tour level and 57-25 this season.
He has won just one Challenger final in Salzburg, but has featured in as many as six finals.

Varillas Has Struggled Outside Clay
Like Ofner, Varillas too made his round of 16 debut in a Grand Slam at Roland Garros. Butt unlike Ofner, Varillas has only performed well on clay.
The Peruvian is 25-24 across levels in 2023 and 19 of thos wins have come on clay. On hard courts, he has a 4-6 record, with 2 of those wins coming at the Australian Open qualifying rounds. He lost the third qualifier but still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, and then went down fighting to Alexander Zverev in the first round.
Varillas, who has a 0-3 record in Masters tournaments, made it to the semifinals in Buenos Aires and the quarterfinals in Gstaad in two of his best performances this year.
At the Challenger level, he featured in one final in Sanremio, only to finish runner-up.
In his most recent tournaments, he lost in the second round in Chengdu and in the first round in Astana to Thiem. Can he raise his level in Shanghai?
Ofner v Varillas Prediction and Tip
Ofner is in good form, he also has a better record on surfaces outside clay and has produced better results overall this year compared to Varillas. Expect Ofner to win this contest and advance to the next round.
