O’Connell In Solid Form

The Australian has been in China for a while, getting acclimated to the conditions. He’s been putting forward some really solid results as well, making it to the quarter-final in Chengdu, for example.

It’s been a really solid season for him overall as he finally started to produce more consistently, which was always a question mark. The talent and skill were never in doubt but you need to perform well regularly if you hope to get somewhere in tennis.

A 34-29 record overall is pretty solid, though it could have been even better. He’s 19-16 on hard courts, which is nothing special, but he’s played well in Cina recently, so that’s a good thing for him.

The matchup is tough; much will depend on both players’ serves, and O’Connell is capable there. Whether he delivers remains a question, though.

Van de Zandschulp Struggling for Wins

Botic van de Zandschulp hasn’t had a very good year so far. His sore is only 18-20, which is far from what we’ve gotten used to in these past few years. The Dutch player is a very streaky player so going up and down is expected from him; however, this is a bit too much.

He picked up some form in the Davis Cup, at least he won a few matches, but then completely disappointed in Astana once more leaving fans puzzled as to what is really going on.

His style is aggressive, powerful serves, and powerful groundstrokes; however, those tend to miss wide more often than not. It’s not a particularly ‘safe’ style because he played himself out of many matches recently.

The matchup against O’Connell doesn’t fit him so it will be interesting to see whether he will be up for the task as it will require the type of effort he hasn’t produced in a while.

O’Connell v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

The matchup so far went the way of the Australian and considering the form of both players it makes sense to back him in this spot.
