Andy Murray v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Their only meeting at the highest level came at the Basel Open in 2022 and Murray had taken three sets to overcome his opponent. Earlier they had also faced off on the Challenger circuit where Safiullin won.

Murray Makes de Minaur Fight in Beijing

Murray hasn’t had the best of form going for him in recent times, especially after he was forced to retire from the Canadian Masters earlier this year.

The world number 41 then lost in the second round of the US Open, fell in the second round of the Zhuhai Open and was sent packing by Alex de Minaur at the China Open last week.

The only silver lining to come from all of that is the fact that Murray made life very difficult for the 1/3 favourite de Minaur, taking him to a third set tie-breaker before getting knocked out.

Overall this year, however, Murray will be reasonably satisfied with record in hardcourt tennis, winning 15 of the 24 matches he’s played. Can he now shrug off the underdog odds on offer here?

Safiullin at Career-Best after Chengdu Shenanigans

A quarterfinalist at Wimbledon this season, all eyes were on Safiullin around his performances at the North American hardcourt swing but he won just one match from three matches.

It was probably the after-effects of such a brilliant showing at Wimbledon but the good news for Safiullin is that he has changed tack and come back well.

In his first tournament since the North American swing, Safiullin did not drop a set on his way to the final of the Chengdu Open. And while Alexander Zverev did get the better of him there to lift another trophy, it wasn’t before the match went into a third set and two of those three went into tie-breakers.

The question now is if Safiullin can translate that form into some substantial in this ATP 1000 event, having never made it past the first round of any Masters event on hardcourt.

Murray v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be an interesting battle between a player who has the game and the experience and another who is an upcoming star and in form but hasn’t done well in Masters events. Backing a three-setter here.
