Gasquet Prepped with Challenger Focus
Since losing in the first round of the US Open, Gasquet has opted to feature on the Challenger circuit as he tries to hone his skills for the rest of the season.
In the three Challengers tournaments he has played in, Gasquet has five wins from eight matches but the question is if that’s enough to help him out of a bit of a mire he finds himself in.
Because for a player who had begun the year with a title win in Auckland, the rest of the season hasn’t gone his way. This can also be seen from his rankings as Gasquet fell from his season-high ranking of 40th in March to his current 64th in the world.
Gasquet now faces a player who has himself not done too well in hardcourt competitions but is coming off a gold medal at the Asian Games.

Zhang Brimming with Asian Games Confidence
While one can question the quality of opposition on display at the Asian Games, Zhang looked to have done well enough there to win the singles gold in that competition.
Zhang did enter that competition on the back of some excellent showings though, having made 2023 his breakthrough year. Having begun the season ranked 99th in the world, he hit a career-best of 52nd earlier this year thanks to his performances at the French Open, Hamburg Open and then the US Open.
He is now 60th but a couple of solid performances here should get him back to his best and even aid him break into the top 50.
The challenge in front of Zhang is the experience of Gasquet, but in terms of preparations it does seem like the Chinese player hasn’t faced any quality opponents in recent times. Can he overturn that?
