Fabio Fognini v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two and Kokkinakis has won every single. Interestingly, all those matches came in first round of tournaments too including one on Fognini’s favourite clay last year.

Match Winning Odds*

Fognini Forced to Play Challengers

Fognini will enter the Shanghai Masters thoroughly undercooked for a hardcourt tournament and that’s not just to do with his overall form but also the number of matches he’s played outside of clay.

Having gotten knocked out of the first qualifying round at the US Open, the once top-10 player Fognini hasn’t featured in any hardcourt encounter since then.

The Italian has, instead, opted to take part on the Challenger circuit where there have been a few clay-court competitions that are still being held. And while he has done reasonably well there, making the final in Genoa, Fognini’s overall record in hardcourt tournaments this season has been 0-5.

As a result, he has fallen to 129th in the world and starting out against a player who relishes his time on the faster courts, things might not get any easy for Fognini.

Kokkinakis Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match Since Toronto

Having been forced to qualify for the Canadian Masters, Kokkinakis then went on to defeat Zhizhen Zhang in the first round there.

Little did he know that it was going to be last win at the highest level because over the following nearly-two months, the Aussie hasn’t done that again.

A second round loss to Lorenzo Musetti in that tournament was followed by an opening defeat in Cincinnati and then another at the US Open where he was a 1/6 favourite against Yu Hsiou Hsu.

Kokkinakis will now hope to get back to his winning ways against a player who has been struggling for any kind of form, and move closer to his career-best ranking of 69th in the world.
