Jessica Pegula v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these including a qualifier in 2015 and Pegula leads 3-1. Ostapenko’s only win came in Quebec in 2015 while in more recent times, Pegula has beaten her in Doha in 2021 and 2023.
Pegula v Ostapenko Match Winning Odds*
- Pegula to win: 2/5 (with bet365)
- Ostapenko to win: 7/5 (with bet365)
Pegula Makes Scratchy Start
Even as Pegula would have been puzzling over her shock defeat in the final of the Tokyo Open last week, she was involved in another difficult encounter here at the China Open against Anna Blinkova.
Pegula, who was 1/10 to defeat Veronika Kudermetova in the final in Tokyo but lost in straight sets, was forced to come back from a set down against Blinkova before registering the win.
After getting an opening round bye, Pegula needed two hours and seven minutes of court time to win 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-1.
Pegula’s problem in the first set was that she was never able to get in front of her opponent, dropping her serve twice in the process. She also missed four set-points at 5-4 before Blinkova shocked her in the ensuing tie-breaker.
The match around for good in the very third game of the second set with Pegula breaking her opponent and then repeating the dose in the seventh. And she followed it up with three breaks of serves in the decider.
What Pegula will know is that she will need to be a lot clinical against the in-form Ostapenko, who not so long ago had also sent Iga Swiatek out of the US Open.

Ostapenko Gets Noskova Walkover
Having needed three sets to edge past Eva Lys in the first round of the competition, Ostapenko did not have to lift her racquet for the second round after getting a walkover from Linda Noskova.
Noskova opted to withdraw from the tournament because of illness, giving Ostapenko a place in the third round for the first time since her US Open quarterfinal appearance last month.
Since that stunning display of tennis, Ostapenko had lost in the second rounds of both, the San Diego Open and Guadalajara Open. And she had fallen a set behind in the Lys encounter, it looked like that US Open performance was way behind her.
But Ostapenko isn’t one to give up too easily as has been the case throughout her career and the 13th seed will now enter this match as an equal in so many ways. Don’t let those odds or the ranking difference fool you.
