Rune v Nakashima Head to Head
They have never faced off at the highest level before this although they did play each other in the 2021 ATP Next Gen Finals. Nakashima had won that one.
Rune Beaten in Beijing Second Round
Rune was flying the high life when he made the Wimbledon quarterfinal earlier this year, only losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the end.
Since then, however, things look to have gone awry for Rune with the Danish number one having participated in six tournaments including the Hopman Cup and Davis Cup and won just two matches. Only one of these victories came in an ATP tournament.
That win came at the China Open last week where Rune overcame the out of sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round only to lose to Grigor Dimitrov in the second.
That, to me, looks like an issue – Rune has looked a bit spent in recent times coming to the end of the season. And while he faces a totally out of form Nakashima in the second round here following an opening bye, that could prove to be a challenge for him.

Nakashima Makes it Past Zapata Miralles
While Rune’s struggles have been restricted to the more recent times, Nakashima has had a forgettable season. From once threatening to break into the top 40, he has now fallen to 123rd in the world and things have regularly gone from bad to worse for the American.
Which is also why despite starting out a 1/3 favourite against Bernabe Zapata Miralles, there were a few question-marks over the possibility of his win.
Nakashima looked to have dispelled them as he eased past a fighting Zapata Miralles 6-1, 7-6 (3) to seal off his second round berth. This was Nakashima’s first main draw win in four tournaments and two in eight.
It took Nakashima an hour and 21 minutes, saw him face no break-points and off the two changes he got, he broke Zapata Miralles both times.
Can he now push struggling Rune too?
