Ruud v Nishioka Prediction and Tip
While Ruud starts off a favourite here we do think Nishioka has the game and the talent to disrupt his clay-court specialist opponent’s rhythm, especially given how things have gone for him all season. Backing this to go into the third set.
Tips & Odds*:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with 888Sport)
Ruud v Nishioka Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one. Ruud clinched a win on the clay courts of Madrid in 2021 while Nishioka avenged that loss in Seoul in 2022.
Ruud Coming off China Open Quarterfinal
Having risen to the world number two at the end of the US Open last year, Ruud has now found himself down to ninth on the ATP charts. And to be honest, his performances have looked like anything but that from a player ranked in the top five of the ATP Rankings.
He was beaten in the second round of the US Open following a set of shoddy showings in Toronto and Cincinnati before that too in which he won just one of the three matches he played.
Ruud went on to make it to the quarterfinals of the China Open last week in what would be a bit of a respite given that it was, rather amazingly, the first time this season that he had won successive matches in a hardcourt competition.
So while he went down rather expectedly to Carlos Alcaraz, there would be some confidence coming into this tournament. Ruud had a first round bye and will now hope he can turn things around from his previous defeat to Nishioka.

Nishioka Struggles to Make it Past Altmaier
A finalist at the Zhuhai Open and having made the second round in Beijing last week, Nishioka was a 1/2 favourite coming up against Daniel Altmaier in his opener here.
And while he started off reasonably well, a mid-match stumble almost cost Nishioka the win before he won it in a third set tie-breaker.
In a match lasting two hours and 23 minutes, Nishioka clinched just one break of serve as Altmaier refused to let up in the final two sets, and things could have gone really awry for the Japanese player had it not been for his tie-breaker showing.
Nishioka reeled off five points in a row to take a 6-1 lead in it before closing out 7-2 to advance to the second round.
Can he now make things difficult for Ruud?
