Hurkacz v Kokkinakis Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Hurkacz has won two. Both his wins came this year, at the Miami Masters and the Cincinnati Masters but more vitally there was a third set tie-breaker in both.
Hurkacz Returns from an Early US Open Ouster
A semifinalist at the Cincinnati Masters, Hurkacz would have considered himself a favourite to make it to the second week of the US Open at the very least. Jack Draper had other ideas as he ended Hurkacz’s run with utmost ease in the very second round of that tournament.
Since then, Hurkacz has featured in only two matches – one apiece at the Davis Cup and the Laver Cup – and won and lost one apiece.
Earlier this year, Hurkacz had featured in two indoor hardcourt competitions and went on to win a title in Marseille – his only tournament win of the season.
It was also his fifth career title in a hardcourt competition and second one indoors, giving us an early indication how much he loves playing on these quicker surfaces. That being said he’s up against a player who hasn’t made things easy for him in the past.

Kokkinakis Routs Fognini
Neither has Fabio Fognini been too proficient at winning matches on the quicker, indoor hardcourts even at his prime, nor has he looked too good on court in recent times.
His ranking has fallen to outside of the top 100 and Kokkinakis was never going to allow him to settle into any kind of rhythm when the two players faced off in their opener.
As it turned out, Kokkinakis ended Fognini’s stay in the tournament in straight sets despite the token resistance that the Italian showed in the second set. The Aussie was on court for an hour and 20 minutes to seal off a 6-2, 6-4 victory over his opponent and move into the second round.
He now faces an opponent whom he has troubled in their last two meetings in 2023 and might just relish the prospects of turning on the screws this time around.
