The second seed Medvdev has a 59-13 record this year, which includes five titles. In ATP 1000 tournaments, he won in Miami and Rome and finished runner-up in Indian Wells.
Overall, he has a 6-3 record in Masters finals and has a 6-2 record in Shanghai.
Given his form throughout the season, he is expected to make a fine start in the tournament.

Garin Holds off Kovacevic
Cristian Garin needed close to two hours to hold off Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round on Wednesday.
The Chilean player got the solitary break of the first set. He was given a tough fight in the second, though, as the American qualifier came back from a break down to force the tiebreak. Garin was forced to save a set point before converting a sixth match point in the tiebreak for a 6-4, 7-6 (12-10) victory.
The Chilean, who is 37-22 across levels this year. Most recently, he lost in the second round in Zhuhai and in the second qualifying round in Beijing.
