Tiafoe in First Match Since US Open
Sure, Tiafoe was a part of the American Davis Cup team and then made the Team World side for Laver Cup as well but he hasn’t played an ATP event since the US Open got over.
The good news is that the last time he took to court for a top level match, it was in the quarterfinals of the US Open. It was his second successive appearance at that stage of the season’s final Grand Slam and third overall in majors.
And while unfortunately for Tiafoe he was shocked by the 19/10 underdog and fellow American Ben Shelton in that match, he will bring some of that form into this tournament.
Tiafoe has featured in all the previous three editions of this tournament having won just one match here. He will hope to double his tally against Sonego.

Sonego Trounces Sekulic
Philip Sekulic is ranked 298th in the world and was never expected to give Sonego a serious fright. Even the odds were heavily stacked up against Sekulic with Sonego starting out a 1/6 favourite to ease to a win.
And that’s exactly what happened with Sonego grabbing a 6-3, 6-2 victory in a match lasting a shade under an hour and a half.
Sonego faced four break-points, saving them all, while overcoming his opponent’s serve on three occasions. Such was the force of Sonego’s first serve, he won it 82% of the time while winning 52% of his second serves.
This win follows a first round loss for Sonego at the hands of Ugo Humbert at the China Open where he had begun at 1/1 odds. Overall, Sonego is 11-13 on hardcourt surfaces with this victory and that is a just indicator how he might find it tough to overpower his 13th-ranked opponent here.
