Jan-Lennard Struff v Matteo Arnaldi Head to Head
The pair have never met before.
This will be the first match between the German, who is 33 years old, and the Italian, eleven years his junior.
Struff Reached Masters Final in Madrid
Having ended 2022 ranked as low as 150 in the world, the German Struff has rebounded strongly in 2023, reaching his first Masters final in Madrid before losing to Carlos Alcaraz, and also reaching the final on the grass of Stuttgart, where he was runner-up to Frances Tiafoe.
An injury to his hip forced him to miss Wimbledon, and he also skipped the US Open as well, his recovery taking longer than he would have liked.
He returned to competitive action came in Zhuhai, where he reached the second round before losing to Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.
Unfortunately for him, his subsequent stay in Beijing proved to be a short one, as he lost in the first round, beaten in straight sets by the world number 9 Casper Ruud.
In 2017 he reached the third round in Shanghai, but given a first round bye, he will be playing his first match in the city since losing in the first round four years ago.

Arnaldi Made to Work His Passage by Australian
Arnaldi can already take a great deal of satisfaction from a season in which he has won two Challenger titles, both om clay, made his Grand Slam debut in Paris, before going on to reach the fourth round in New York, and beaten several top ranked players in the form of Casper Ruud and Cameron Norrie.
He also reached the third round of the Madrid Masters.
To that growing list of achievements he can also now add his first win in Shanghai, although the world number 43, Alexei Popyrin, made him work for his victory.
In fact, it was the Australian who began the stronger, forcing the one break of serve that enabled him to take the first set.
When Arnaldi dropped his serve again midway through the second set, the writing appeared on the wall for him.
The Italian, though, regrouped, broke back straight away, and then again to level the match.
When he secured two early breaks in the third set, the Italian was entitled to think he had done all the hard work. Popyrin, though, was not finished, and he managed to get one of the breaks back.
Arnaldi, however, ensured that was to be the last chance the Australian got.
