Marton Fucsovics v Francisco Cerundulo Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before.
This will be the first match between the 31 year old Hungarian, and the Argentine, who is six years younger.
Fucsovics Ousts Canadian Seed
Fucsovics, despite coming into the tournament in indifferent form, has now surpassed his previous best in Shanghai by reaching the third round for the first time.
He was handed a kind draw in the first round, playing the Kazakh qualifier, Denis Yevseyev, and he promptly beat the world number 260 in straight sets comfortably.
There was nothing easy about his next opponent though, the 14th seed, Felix Augur-Aliassime from Canada.
The start of the match was scrappy from both men, with a break apiece, and other break opportunities going begging, the Canadian particularly at fault.
Augur-Aliassime did have two set points, but Fucsovics saved them both and went on to dominate the subsequent tie-break.
The second set saw the pair swap breaks again, before a Fucsovics dropped serve gave the Canadian the chance to level the match, which he duly took.
However, early in the third set, Augur-Aliassime dropped his serve and that proved to be the turning point.
Fucsovics consolidated that, and, although the 14th seed saved three match points and had a break back point of his own, the Hungarian would not be denied in the end.
Cerundulo Survives American Battle
Cerundulo has a good record in Masters’ events, having reached both the semi-finals and quarter-finals in Miami in the past, and the quarter-final in Rome five months ago.
Now he has reached the third round in Shanghai on his first visit, although a first round bye gave him a helping start on his journey.
But, when he found out that he then had to play the American, Mackenzie McDonald, the world number 38, the Argentine would have known he was in for a tough battle, and that was exactly what he got.
The pattern of the match was set in the first set, with serve largely dominating and neither man able to force a break opportunity.
Finally, in the resulting tie-break, Cerundulo forced a set point and was able to convert it.
When McDonald broke him early in the second set, the American threatened to take control. But the Argentine, recovered, and got the break back, and later engineered another break, giving him the chance to serve out.
McDonald was by no means finished, though, and he got the break back to force yet another tie-break,
But yet again Cerundulo was the one to seize his opportunity by converting the first match point that came his way.
