Zhizhen Zhang v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head
The two will be playing against each other for the first time.
Zhang Edges Past Etcheverry
Zhizhen Zhang’s breakthrough season got even better as the Chinese player became the first local hope to reach the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
The world no. 60 bounced back from a set down to edge past Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Zhang saved 5 of 6 break points and capitalised on 3 of 4 breaking opportunities to knock out the 28th seed and extend his current winning run to seven matches. Zhang had come into the tournament as the Asian Games gold medallist.
In the last 10 matches, he has a 9-1 record and that includes a third round finish at the US Open.
Zhang, who defeated Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, is 17-15 at the tour level in 2023. He also reached his maiden ATP 1000 quarterfinal this year in Madrid.
Can he keep his winning run going in Shanghai?
Nakashima Knocks out Rune
Brandon Nakashima got the first top 1o win of his career as he ousted world no. 5 Holger Rune with a near-perfect performance in the second round on Friday.
Nakashima was not broken in the match as he saved the only one that he faced in the contest, while he converted 5 of 14 break points to score a 6-0, 6-2 victory in 67 minutes.
The world no. 122, who knocked out Bernabe Zapate Miralles 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round, had come into the tournament in ordinary form as he had lost four matches on the trot.
In fact, he has struggled to win consistently throughout the season and as a result has fallen out of the top 100, despite starting the year in the top 50.
With the two wins, Nakashima has improved his season record to 13-19. Can he get more wins under his belt in Shanghai, where he is making his debut?
