Iga Swiatek v Liudmila Samsonova Head to Head
Swiatek leads the rivalry 2-0. It was a three-set affair in Stuttgart last year, but this year in Dubai, Swiatek thrashed the Russian 6-1, 6-0.
Swiatek v Samsonova Match Winning Odds*
- Swiatek to win: 1/4
- Samsonova to win: 3/1
Swiatek Ends Gauff’s 16-Match Winning Streak
World no. 2 Iga Swiatek ended world no. 3 Coco Gauff’s 16-match unbeaten streak with a straight sets drubbing in the semifinal in Beijing on Saturday.
As a result of the win Swiatek improved her head-to-head record against Gauff to 8-1.
The Pole suffered her only defeat to the 18-year-old in the Cincinnati Open semifinal this year. That tournament was where Gauff had embarked on a 16-match win streak. The American won her maiden WTA 1000 title there and followed it up by winning her first ever major at the US open.
She was also looking good in Beijing, until Saturday, when Swiatek dominated the contest from start to finish. The second seed did not face a break point in the match and converted half of eight break points during a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory.
This is the eighth time that Swiatek will be playing in a WTA 1000 final. She has won five titles and has finished runner-up twice. Both of her runner-up finishes came in her only two WTA 1000 finals this year.
Overall, this year, it is the 15-time tour level champion’s seventh final of the season. She has a 4-2 record in finals in 2023.
The Pole ousted Sara Sorribes Tormo, Varvara Gracheva and Magda Linette in straight sets in the first three rounds in Beijing, but needed three sets and two hours and 38 minutes to battle past Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal.
Can Swiatek, who is 62-11 this season, pick up her first title since winning the Warsaw Open in July?
Samsonova Knocks Out Rybakina
World no. 22 Liudmila Samsonova reached her seventh WTA final and a third this season as she knocked out Elena Rybakina in the semifinal on Saturday.
The Russian, who finished runner-up in the Abu Dhabi and the Canadian Opens this year, had won all four of her finals played before this season.
Samsonova, who saved a set point in the first set before taking it in the tiebreak, got the solitary break in the second to win the one hour and 42 minute contest 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
The win over the fifth seed was a third over a seed in the tournament for the 24-year-old. She had beaten the 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal and the 17th seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.
She had also begun the tournament with a straight sets win over Alicia Parks, but needed three sets to beat Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 in the round of 16.
She is in fine form at the moment. Can she win her maiden WTA 1000 title on Sunday?
Swiatek v Samsonova Prediction and Tip
Swiatek is better equipped to handle the pressure in a big final. She is also the superior player in this contest and will look to extend her dominance over the Russian with a third straight win over her.
