Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Benoit Paire Head to Head
The two players have met thrice on the ATP Tour and right now, Tsonga leads by 3-0. All of those wins came in straight sets, with their last meeting taking place in the 2015 US Open.
Tsonga Closing in on His Second Final
Tsonga’s resurgence so far has gone pretty much according to the plan, barring a few unexpected results. He started the season with a semifinal run in Brisbane and later, won the ATP Montpellier. On the back of these two wins, he moved into the top 150.
After these positive results, Tsonga’s form took a slight hit as he incurred a series of early losses in Marseille and Miami. Nonetheless, in Marrakech, he has turned it all around, courtesy of a superb performance.
He made it to the semifinal on the back of straight-set victories against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Kyle Edmund and most recently, Lorenzo Sonego. He has looked comfortable throughout the tournament and is certainly now a top favourite to go the distance.
Paire Reaches his First Semifinal of the Season
Paire, who is currently ranked in the late 60s, has spent most of his year so far switching between the ATP and Challenger circuits. With a win-loss record of 4-9, he hasn’t had that exciting of a season.
Needless to mention, he has had more success on the Challenger tour, reaching the quarterfinal in Rennes and the final in Marbella, Spain. He has failed to replicate these wins in the big tournaments. The Frenchman lost in the first round in the Indian Wells Open and Miami Masters and incurred similar defeats in Marseille, Montpellier, and Rotterdam.
In Marrakech, however, he has had a great deal of success. Paire started his campaign with a three-set win over Aljaz Bedene and then dispatched the likes of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Jaume Munar.
Tsonga v Paire Predictions & Tips
Tsonga is set to start this match as the favourite to win. He has more experience, momentum, and most importantly, holds a 3-0 lead over his compatriot. It will be hard to Paire to upset a player who is in a good form of late, especially given that he hasn’t been that particularly impressive in recent times.
However, Tsonga hasn’t had a perfect year and is certainly prone to defeats at the hands of lowly-ranked players.
Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 17/20 (Unibet)
