The WTA Abu Dhabi Open looks sure to bring massive entertainment with a star-studded lineup, whilst we also have our first clay court of the year in the form of the Cordoba Open. The men also look to lift the Open 13 in Marseille, and the Dallas Open brings the best of America to Texas.
Here who to look out for across the week, and where you might see some shock results.
Players In-Form
Barbora Krejcikova
Kejcikova enjoyed a relatively fruitful Australian Open to kickstart her season, battling to beat the massively in form Mirra Andreeva. The Czech has turned her full attention to singles tennis since her shock split from doubles partner Katerina Siniakova to end their dominant era.
She will have massive competition in the Abu Dhabi open, in a tournament that looks like the highlight of the week.
But, the former Wimbledon champion will hope to come out on top against some of the biggest names currently and lift the trophy.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry
The Argentine made himself more well known to he world with his run in the Australian Open, taking out Andy Murray and Gael Monfils before putting up a fair fight against an admittedly out of form Novak Djokovic in the Round of 32.
The results of that run has put him at the highest he has ever been in the ATP World Rankings, where he sits pretty in 28th place.
He goes into Cordoba on a massive high, and is the 3rd highest seed in the tournament, only below fellow countrymen Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo, and with the tournament being held on his favourite surface, clay, everything points to him playing his best tennis in Spain.
Hubert Hurkacz
The Pole has had a brilliant start to the new season, getting all the way to the quarter finals of the Australian open, his best result in the tournament, and his best result in any grand slam of his career so far.
Not only this, but Hurkacz is also currently the highest ranking he has ever been, sitting proudly at number 8 in the ATP world rankings.
This is what makes him the top seed at Open 13 in Marseille this week, and he’ll be looking to continue in this form and is the hot favourite to lift the trophy in South France, and claim his 8th career title.
Players Out Of Form
Ons Jabeur
The Tunisian’s career has been full of ups and downs, and after her performance In the Australian open, its very clear to see that she is currently in a major dip.
The results were poor, but it was just how uninspired a usually well motivated Ons Jabeur looked in her straight sets loss to 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva that was a concerning sight.
In Abu Dhabi she’ll look to correct that but will have a tough battle on her hands in a tournament including Emma Raducanu, the formerly mentioned Barbora Krejcikova and a returning Naomi Osaka.
Elena Rybakina
Rybakina is coming off a red hot 2023, where she reached her career high world ranking of 3 and scored career best runs into the US open and Australian Open, reaching the final of the latter.
But the Kazakh national fell at the second round of the Australian open, losing in an incredible 22-20 tie breaker to unseeded Anna Blinkova.
She currently stands at fifth in the rankings, and that makes her the top seed for the Abu Dhabi open, just edging out previously mentioned Ons Jabeur to earn that right.
Just like Ons Jabeur, however, the Australian Open rebound will be in one of the most difficult non-grand slams of the year, with a stacked line up full of potential early-round banana skins she must avoid in order to get back on track.
Frances Tiafoe
Finally, American Frances Tiafoe returns to America to take top seed at the Dallas Open this week.
The world no. 14 looks to turn around his poor form after losing three of his first four matches in the new season, including a straight set loss to Tomas Machac.
Tiafoe had a good 2023 year, and many thought the American would use that as a base for a standout 2024, but that unfortunately does not look like it will be reality at the moment.
He has the chance to silence the critics in a big tournament in Texas this week, with the likes of Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Chris Eubanks all looking for a home nation win.
