Wimbledon is widely regarded as the most prestigious event in the tennis world, and the 2024 edition draws closer with each passing second.
Carlos Alcaraz will return to the grass courts after defeating Novak Djokovic in last year’s final – a defeat which stopped the Serbian from surpassing Roger Federer’s record number of Wimbledon triumphs. Djokovic will participate in the tournament after the French Open this May and compete alongside Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner.
Marketa Vondrousova will also return to defend her title after a remarkable victory over Ons Jabeur in 2023, which made her the first unseeded women’s player to win Wimbledon.
Wimbledon 2024 First Entry List
The first entry list for the 2024 Wimbledon Championship has been released with ATP and WTA World’s No.1’s – Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek headlining the men and female single categories respectively.
Novak Djokovic beat 2024 Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and two-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz to the top spot on the men’s list. Rafael Nadal is also on the initial entry list, utilizing a protected ranking (PR) to secure entry to the main draw. In addition to Rafael Nadal, players like Pablo Carreno Busta, Denis Shapovalov, Soonwoo Kwon, Kei Nishikori, and Dominic Stricker will also be using protected rankings.
Former ATP World No. 4 Kei Nishikori will return to action at Wimbledon 2024 after a lengthy hiatus due to a hip injury. He has played very few matches in the past two years. He received a wildcard at the 2024 Miami Open but lost his first match to Sebastian Ofner.
India’s Sumit Nagal will also compete at Wimbledon this summer, having been included in the initial entry list for the Wimbledon 2024 Championships.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek tops the ladies’ singles entry list for Wimbledon 2024. Her best result in the grass-court was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 edition. Two-time Australian Open Champion Aryna Sabalenka is ranked second, followed by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina and USA’s youngster – Coco Gauff.
The defending champion, Marketa Vondrousova, is ranked seventh on the initial entry list. However, with some players withdrawing from the tournament, these rankings and names may change over time.
Adversely, former US Open Champion Emma Raducanu announced her withdrawal from the 2024 French Open, as she is focusing on competing at the 2024 Wimbledon.
Australia has large participants in the men’s and women’s singles competitions at Wimbledon this year, with eleven Australian players (nine men and two women) featured in the grass-court Grand Slam tournament’s direct acceptance lists.
Alex de Minaur headlines Austrian contenders in the men’s single’s event. The World No.11 has previously stated his preference for playing on grass courts and named Wimbledon his favourite participating tournament. He was a boys’ singles finalist at Wimbledon in 2016.
In the women’s singles competition, Ajla Tomljanovic, who has reached the quarterfinals in her last two Wimbledon appearances, has got a spot in the tournament this year with her special ranking as world No. 33. The 31-year-old missed last year’s event due to knee surgery.
23-year-old Rinky Hijikata and 25-year-old Adam Walton add to the list of Australians participating at the event having earned their main-draw singles debuts at Wimbledon this year.
Men and women’s World’s No.103 – James Duckworth and Arina Rodionova are the fifth and sixth alternates respectively. They can gain entry to the main draw should athletes withdraw before the Wimbledon qualifying begins.
The final number of Australian players in Wimbledon qualifying will be confirmed in early June. The 2024 Wimbledon qualifying competition runs from June 24-27, with the main draw holding from July 1-14.
Wimbledon 2024 Prize Money
The Wimbledon Championships continues to attract the best talents from around the globe. For the 2024 edition, Wimbledon again plans to set a record with its prize pool, reflecting the tournament’s status and the athletes’ immense effort.
The total prize fund for Wimbledon 2024 is yet to be announced but the prize has seen a significant increase in recent years to ensure it remains competitive with the other Grand Slam tournaments.
The exact amount is anticipated to surpass previous years, continuing the trend of incremental increases. Last year’s prize of £44.7million saw winners – Alcaraz and Vondrousova walk away with £2.35m each. So if it happens to be anything like last year’s, some individuals will be taking away a lot of money.
The tournament’s equal pay policy that has stood for many years means the Men’s and Women’s singles champions will receive a substantial sum. The winners can expect to take home millions of pounds each. The finalists (runner-ups) will also be awarded a generous amount. Those reaching the later stages of the competition will receive impressive sums, rewarding their deep runs in the tournament. Players eliminated in the earlier rounds also receive notable payouts, ensuring that all participants benefit financially.
The prize money for Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Doubles also increased. Like the Singles, winning pairs in these categories will share substantial rewards, with impressive amounts allocated down to the teams exiting in the earlier rounds.
By continually increasing the prize fund, Wimbledon ensures it attracts the highest caliber of players and offers a financial incentive that matches the prestige of winning at the All England Club. For many players, especially those outside the top rankings, the prize money from Wimbledon can significantly impact their careers. It supports their training, travel, and other expenses throughout the year, allowing them to focus on improving their game.
