Carlos Alcaraz will undoubtedly win the 2024 men’s title, with current world #1 Jannik Sinner coming in second.
Sinner started the year with a dominant win at the Australian Open, but the Spaniard’s performance remained favourable throughout the rest of the year.
Fans with Roland Garros tickets witnessed greatness unfold as he claimed his first title in clay, marking a new legacy at the French Open.
Following the footsteps of another legendary Spaniard, who has etched his name across the courts of Paris, Alcaraz has gained praise for his season overall from several greats.
Praise for Alcaraz
Alcaraz Both Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz have shared this season’s Grand Slam titles, with the Italian shining on hard courts while the Spaniard excelled on the “natural surfaces,” securing a rare ‘Channel Slam’ along the way.
Former tennis star, Laura Robson weighed in on their seasons, elevating Alcaraz’s achievements above Sinner’s.
The Briton praised the four-time Grand Slam champion, particularly highlighting his remarkable performances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Robson labeled Alcaraz’s ‘Channel Slam’ an extraordinary feat—an achievement that only the greatest players of the Open era have been able to accomplish.
At a mere 21 years and two months, Carlos etched his name in the record books, becoming the sixth and youngest recipient of the coveted ‘Channel Slam.’ He clinched his first title at Roland Garros, overcoming Jannik Sinner.
Just a month later, Alcaraz successfully defended his title at Wimbledon, securing his fourth Grand Slam trophy at such a tender age. This victory places him in illustrious company alongside legends like Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic as a proud Channel Slam owner.
Despite a rocky start to the clay season due to an arm injury, Alcaraz rebounded just in time for Roland Garros, determined to bag his maiden Major trophy in Paris. He toppled three top-30 opponents on his way to the semi-finals.
In the semi-final against Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz trailed two sets to one in both encounters.
However, the young Spaniard rose to the occasion, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and winning in five thrilling sets.
This encounter was more interesting than the final, as the fans with Roland Garros tickets saw the youngster’s potential to have the fighting spirit to battle until the end.
In doing so, Alcaraz became the first player since 1961 to overturn a sets-to-one deficit in both the Roland Garros semi-final and final! Moreover, he also made history as the youngest player to claim a Major title on all three surfaces.
As Alcaraz prepared to face Sinner again this season, the Italian took two sets to-one lead, aiming to extend his streak at the Grand Slam level.
But Alcaraz was ready for the ultimate test on the famed Court Philippe-Chatrier. He began his comeback in the fourth set, reeling off 11 straight holds to prevail in a dramatic four-hour and nine-minute match, winning 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and setting up a title clash against Masters champion, Alexander Zverev.
At 27, Zverev chased his first Major crown and started the final strongly, claiming five consecutive games across two sets. Yet, Alcaraz proved too strong, triumphing 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in four hours and 19 minutes, celebrating his first Roland Garros title.
Though the young Spaniard faced a setback in the third set, he kept his cool and dominated sets four and five, losing only five games to lift his third Grand Slam trophy.
Zverev had fought hard to steal the third set, rallying from 2-5 down to take it, but Alcaraz regained control on serve and returned in the final two sets, closing out the match with style—converting nine breaks from 16 opportunities and winning 45% of return points.
Just a few weeks later, Alcaraz aimed for back-to-back titles at Wimbledon. Facing a challenging road during his title defence, he showed remarkable poise. He ultimately celebrated his fourth Major title and secured the illustrious ‘Channel Slam’ at 21.
Carlos narrowly edged out, losing a set in his matches since the fourth round. Yet, he kept his nerve, winning all four matches in four sets to reach the final.
In the semi-final, Alcaraz dropped the first set before displaying skill and resilience. Just as in the previous year, he met for the final title showdown. The young star prevailed with a convincing 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 victory in just two hours and 27 minutes, becoming among the youngest back-to-back champions at the All England Club.
Alcaraz’s serving and returning were on point as he left the veteran behind in the opening two sets. Although he faced a rare break point in the third set, he held his composure, ultimately sealing the title in a tie-break after dropping serve while serving for it.
The tie-break was a tightly contested affair, with both players exchanging mini-breaks. Yet, Carlos stepped up and clinched four of the following five points, finishing with a service winner to secure his second consecutive Wimbledon title and a coveted ‘Channel Slam.’
“Carlos has taken titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, joining an elite list of players who have achieved such a feat. To transition between surfaces in such a short timeframe is remarkable.
Additionally, he returned to clay and nearly claimed Olympic gold. His run over the past few months has been exceptional,” Laura Robson remarked.
