Simona Halep v Caroline Garcia Head to Head
The two ladies have met six times on the WTA Tour so far and Halep presently leads with a 5-1 lead. They last met in the WTA Montreal last season where the Romanian won in straight sets.
Halep Off to a Great Start!
Halep started her run in the Fed Cup semifinal with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kristina Mladenovic. In an hour and 42 minutes, she gave Romania the much needed early lead. The World No. 2 was clinical as usual over the course of the match, dishing out 22 winners and keeping her first service win rate at 77%.
The Romanian’s performance this season has been quite interesting. Even though she is yet to win a singles title, she has been quite stunning throughout the season and has made it to the penultimate rounds on numerous occasions.
While her start to the season wasn’t that great, she had a breakthrough in Doha when she reached the final and later, was a quarterfinalist in Dubai as well. Her last event was the Miami Open where she was a semifinalist, losing to Karolina Pliskova.
The reigning French Open champion has been quite instrumental in Romania’s efforts to reach their first Fed Cup final. She single-handedly took the side through to its first semifinal since 1973 after defeating the Czech Republic team by 3-2 in February this year.
Halep fought back and defeated Karolina Pliskova and Katerina Siniakova in a remarkable fashion.
Garcia, Can she Deliver on the Big Stage?
Just like Halep, Garcia too started her run in the Fed Cup semifinal with a straight-set win over Mihaela Buzarnescu.
On one hand, while Halep has had a good year so far, the same hasn’t been the case for Garcia. Her win-loss record is tied at 7-7 and most of her season is marked by early exits.
She won her first match of the year in Melbourne and even then, she made it as far as the third round. The same was the case in Hua Hin, Dubai, and Indian Wells too. Her last event was in Miami where she reached the fourth round before falling to Petra Kvitova.
In the doubles tie, she can very well win given her proclivity towards that level of playing. But before that happens, she needs to solve the Halep riddle.
Halep v Garcia Tips & Predictions
This match should end in an easy win for the Romanian. Halep has been in a stunning form of late and despite her shaky form this year, she should be able to defeat Garcia comfortably. However, there have been instances this year where the Romanian lost shockingly in a way that no one saw it coming. Therefore, while she will start as the favourite, there is a chance for Garcia to win here.
