South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has withdrawn from the clay court season this year because of fitness issues.

The world number six said he wouldn’t be playing any of the clay court tournaments including the French Open at Roland-Garros beginning May.

He will also be missing the Estoril Open, Madrid Masters and the Rome Masters as a result of that injury. Anderson has had a chronic elbow injury that he needs to rest and he tweeted he will try and return from his rehabilitation for the grass swing.

The South African last played at the Miami Masters where he reached the quarter-final before losing to the eventual champion Roger Federer. Earlier in the year he had won the title at Pune but was then ousted in the second round of the 2019 Australian Open.

That elbow problem did not allow Anderson to play any competitions between the Australian Open in January and the Miami Masters towards the end of March.

Currently, the top players in the world like Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic are all participating at the Barcelona Open and Hungarian Open. The Madrid and the Rome Masters will follow later in May where Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will also join the party in the lead-up to the French Open.
