Frances Tiafoe v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

There is no history of any previous meetings between these two players.

Can Frances Tiafoe Go One Better This Year In Estoril?

Frances Tiafoe reached the final of the Millennium Estoril Open last year and lost in a close straight sets match to Portugal’s Joao Sousa. That was the closest Tiafoe had ever reached to winning his first career title on clay.

The American is not a huge fan of the dirt as evident with his dire form on the surface after Estoril last year. This time though the Florida resident is seeking a personal milestone after a stunning start to the year where he reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

However, Tiafoe’s form fell off a cliff since Melbourne. He won just one match before going on another quarterfinal run in Miami. Tiafoe is coming off a straight sets win over Mikhail Kukushkin where he was imperious on serve, saving five of the six break points the Kazakh conjured.

Nishioka Looking For Breakthrough Season On Clay

It is fair to say that luck has not stood by Yoshihito Nishioka’s side. The 23-year-old Japanese is a tenacious tennis player whose relentless tennis can be fascinating at times, but he has had a very difficult time recuperating from a serious injury in 2017 before enjoying his best year on tour in 2018.

Nishioka’s bad luck saw him miss the entire clay court season a couple of years ago just when he was building some momentum following an impressive run to the fourth round at Indian Wells. The Japanese suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage which forced him out of the tour for the whole season.

This is probably the first time Nishioka will have a genuine chance of replicating his hard court displays on the clay, and he can be a challenging opponent on any day.

Tiafoe v Nishioka Predictions & Tips

Both these players are usually not comfortable on clay and the conditions in Estoril are not good this week especially if you want to see a typical grinding tennis match on the surface. I feel Nishioka will be a thorn in Tiafoe’s game but I am not entirely convinced by his capabilities to thwart Tiafoe’s heavy groundstrokes and win the match. Expect a long one on breezy night in Estoril.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
