Alexander Zverev v Christian Garin Head to Head
These two players have never played each other before this.
Zverev, Poor Recent Form Explained
Zverev began his defence of his title, and his bid for a third successive win in this tournament in Munich by easily defeating Juan Ignacio Londero on Wednesday.
After the match he explained to the press that off the field problems – his split with his agent Patricio Apey – had affected his form in recent months, and were a contributory factor to his recent poor performances. Since reaching the final in Acapulco he has failed to win more than a single match in any of the events that he has entered.
Interestingly, he had earlier revealed he had no clue what he needed to do to get back to his best that has seen him climb to the third rank in the world.
However, he is now confident that he can get his game back together. Another win in Bavaria would do the job nicely and give him a lot of confidence going into the rest of the clay-court swing.
Garin, Breakthrough Year for Chilean
The 2013 French Open junior champion had struggled to make any impression on the senior tour until this year, when he reached his first ATP final in Sao Paolo. Last month he surpassed that feat by winning the US Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston; in doing so, he became the first player from Chile to win a senior ATP title in ten years.
Since then, he reached the last 16 in Barcelona, knocking out Denis Shapovalov along the way, and has now reached the quarter finals here, with two good straight sets wins. First he beat the German qualifier, Yannick Maden, and then, more impressively, defeated the number six seed, Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
Zverev v Garin Predictions & Tips
Zverev will start odds-on favourite at 3/8, whilst Garin is priced at 40/17. Zverev may have had his issues in recent months, but playing in a tournament he has come to regard as his own, and in front of his home fans, he should have too much for Garin.
Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
