Gael Monfils saw off big serving American Reilly Opelka in three sets in tough windy conditions. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is arguably one of the best talents to come from Spain since a certain Rafael Nadal burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old in Monte Carlo in 2003. While this may be an exaggerated statement to make at this early stage, there is no doubting Davidoch Fokina’s promising talent.
The Spanish teenager had never won an ATP tour main draw match prior to Estoril, but he has managed to change that record in the span of two days. The 19-year-old beat established tour-level players Taylor Fritz and most memorably Jeremy Chardy in 48 minutes in one of the shortest matches in 2019.
The former junior World No.2 won the boy’s Wimbledon title in 2017 and ended that year inside the Top 500. His good results on the Challenger tour in Bangkok and Marbella propelled his rise in the rankings to inside Top 200.
