Kiki Bertens v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head
These two players have played each other twice, splitting a win a piece. Bertens was the victor in their recent meeting which happened at Wimbledon in 2016.
Bertens Will Be A Strong Contender This Week
Kiki Bertens reached the final of the Mutua Madrid Open last year before losing out to Petra Kvitova in an epic tussle. The Dutchwoman memorably beat the likes of Anastasija Sevastova, Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Caroline Garcia before falling to the inspired Czech in the final.
Bertens is coming into this year’s Madrid Open as one of the leading candidates to usurp Kvitova and take the title after establishing herself as clay court force in the last few seasons with a title triumph in Charleston in her resume.
The seventh seed is a former French Open semifinalist, and she has won titles in Cincinnati and Seoul proving she is not just a one-surface or one-dimensional player.
Bertens begun her Madrid Open campaign in brilliant fashion as she beat Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in straight sets. She is scheduled to meet Kvitova in the quarters in a rematch of last year’s final.
Ostapenko Going Through A ‘Crisis’
Jelena Ostapenko’s confidence has been severely dented. However, her straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round will serve as a welcome relief for a woman who has won back-to-match matches just once this year.
In fact her defeats have been so chastening to the point where she lost to lowly ranked American Kristie Ahn in Bogota a few weeks ago. That was Ahn’s only main draw win this year.
Given Ostapenko’s unpredictability, it is almost impossible to call her matches of late.
Bertens v Ostapenko Predictions & Tips
Bertens is overall a better player than Ostapenko especially on clay. The World No.31 has been off the boil for quite some time and I don’t think her win over Pavlyuchenkova will cover her in glory. The Latvian’s form has been abysmal and it would be a shock of seismic proportions if she wins here.
