Marin Cilic v Laslo Djere Head to Head

Oddly enough, these two top-30 ranked players have never faced each other which is surprising as they are 31 and 24 years old, so their time spent on the ATP tour is not short by any means. One thing is for sure, that Djere has a surface advantage entering this match as the seven years younger player has a career record of 219 wins and 97 losses on clay while Cilic has 151 wins 89 losses.

Cilic Struggling since Season Start

Since the start of 2019, Cilic has managed to win only six of his 12 competitive matches, being his best self in the Australian Open, where he won the opening three matches and lost to Bautista-Agut after that in the round of 16. After that, he lost 5 of his next 6 matches and 2-1 set-wins over Klizan and Struff in the opening rounds of this tournament came like a breath of fresh air in his tennis life.

He has never managed to go past the round of 16 here in Madrid, playing in the tournament nine times and exiting in the first or second round on five of those times. That shouldn’t surprise one bit as the 195cm Croatian bomber always played his best tennis on fast surfaces and this slow red clay really doesn’t fit his style of play.

Djere’s Having a Dream Year

Laslo Djere entered this year as the 93rd ranked ATP player and will be 30th next week, no matter how this match ends. That is an amazing step forward for this clay specialist and I think that we will see even more from the 24 year old player from Serbia.

He has managed to win the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro back in February and played two more ATP 250 semifinals (in Sao Paolo and Budapest), all this on clay, where his record for the year is 12 wins and 4 losses.

His wins over 24th ranked Lajovic and 8th ranked Del Potro in the opening rounds of this tournament showed that Djere is a big threat for anyone on this surface and a possible top 20 player for years to come.

Cilic v Djere Predictions & Tips

One can’t ignore the great form of Djere since this year started, especially on clay and that he has too many weapons in his arsenal for a mediocre clay player like Cilic, who is totally out of form last five months. Djere could just nick this one.

Tip: Djere to win: 5/4 (888Sport)
