The draw of the 2019 Rome Masters has been the craziest one we saw in a while as this match between Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Carreno-Busta is one of many which could have been played in the final stages but they will face off in the opener. These players will meet on Monday, May 13, not before 2 pm local time (1 pm BST) on the Pietrangeli Court. Denis Shapovalov v Pablo Carreno-Busta Head to Head
Only one previous match was played between Shapovalov and Carreno-Busta, in the 2017 US Open round of 16, and Carreno-Busta won it after three tiebreakers.
This could and should be an equally interesting match as both players are entering it without a previous win on this surface in 2019, Carreno-Busta losing all four of his clay matches and Shapovalov losing all three of his.
Shapovalov Looking to Arrest a Four-Match Losing Streak
After a great run at the Miami Masters when Shapovalov managed to get into the semifinals and lost there to Federer, the young Canadian lost three matches on clay and won only one set in those matches. He has lost to Struff, Garin and Auger Aliassime, being really bad on his own serve and allowing 13 breaks in those three matches.
He was much better on clay last year when he won 7 of 12 matches on this surface and managed to get into the Madrid Masters semifinals and lost to Zverev so his focus will be on getting at least a win or two on clay ahead of the Roland Garros.
Carreno-Busta Needs to up his Game Returning from an Injury
Pablo Carreno-Busta injured his right shoulder on February 6, in the second set of ATP Cordoba round of 16 match against Cachin, where he won the opening set and was in control. He returned to tennis almost 11 weeks later in Barcelona where he lost to Paire and has lost twice more in the following weeks, to Chardy and Opelka in the opening rounds of ATP Estoril and Madrid Masters.
These are certainly not good news as Carreno-Busta is a much better player than all of those players he lost to, especially on clay, and even after an injury, he should have won at least two of those three matches.
Now a big question mark hangs above the Spaniard’s head and we can’t be sure if he’s 100% fit and ready to take on Shapovalov, hence the 1/1 odds for his victory despite him having a 330/157 career record on clay while Shapovalov has only 48/22.
Shapovalov v Carreno-Busta Predictions & Tips
Neither player has a distinct advantage going into this encounter which is why one can expect a close, three-setter. Going for the over-games market.
