Kyle Edmund v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

Before this Rome Masters encounter, these players met in ATP Vienna round of 16, last October, and Verdasco won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, which was their only head to head clash to date.

That win for the Spaniard surprised many as Edmund was a 9/20 favourite to win and it made sense before the match as 12 years older Verdasco was never a good indoors player and has entered that match with an 82-68 indoor record while Edmund had 24-6.

Kyle Edmund is in a Slump At The Moment

After winning his first clay match of the season Edmund managed to lose four in a row, winning only one set in those four losses. He even managed to lose 6-4, 6-3 to Kudla in Munich as a 3/25 favourite (Kudla has won only one set in five other matches he played on clay this year).

This is a bad look for Edmund as he is defending 90 points he won here in Rome last year when he got into the round of 16 and lost there to later finalist Alex Zverev, so he needs to be on a much higher level in this clash against Verdasco in order to get the win.

In the past, he looked much better on clay and his record on this surface entering this year was 134-49 with two Challenger titles won.

Verdasco Playing Better Than Expected?

Verdasco might be almost 36 years old (turning 36 in November) but is playing really solid tennis since the season started and his 11 wins from 21 matches prove that. He has managed to beat Albot and Khachanov last week in Madrid, losing in the round of 16 to later finalist Tsitsipas and proving to everyone that he can still play on the highest level.

He is the second oldest best-ranked player in top 50, being 38th at the moment and only legendary Federer who is 3rd at the age of 38 is a better-ranked and older player than Verdasco.

He has three wins and four losses on clay in 2019 but three of his four losses came against much younger players which are better ranked and Verdasco didn’t disappoint in any of his clay court matches this season.

Kyle Edmund v Fernando Verdasco Predictions & Tips

I think that we will see a close and interesting match here, where one great shot or a few unforced errors could decide the final outcome.

The opening set should be especially close as both players should come out motivated and knowing that they could win so I think that we won’t see too many breaks of serve in the early stages. This is why my bet for this one is over 9.5 games in the first set.

Tip: Over 9.5 games in the first set: 19/25 (888Sport)
