Marin Cilic v Andrea Basso Head to Head
Cilic and Basso have no previous history on tour. It will be a first meeting between the pair, and a first appearance in an ATP main draw for the Italian journeyman.
Cilic Has Recovered From Food Poisoning
Just when you thought that Marin Cilic was on the comeback trail then out of the blue food poisoning struck and the Croat is back from where he started.
The 2014 US Open champion had picked up his first win on clay in 2019 when he saved four match-points to beat Martin Klizan in Madrid and snapped a five-match losing streak. He followed that victory swiftly by dismissing big serving German Jan-Lennard Struff in another pulsating three setter. He produced another comeback win in the third round against Laslo Djere, recovering from a set and break down to beat the Rio Open champion in three sets.
Cilic felt optimistic about his chances of upsetting World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the quarters after claiming three wins on the spin. However, he suffered from food poisoning overnight and had to withdraw very late the following morning.
The 30-year-old will return to Rome where he has had a very good record in the last two seasons. He reached the quarterfinal in 2017 and then the semifinals in 2018 where he lost to Zverev.
Basso, The Italian Journeyman Making His Main Draw Debut
Andrea Basso won the pre-qualifying wildcard tournament to earn his spot in the main draw of an ATP tour tournament for the first time in his career.
The Italian had no expectations coming to Rome and it took a lot of convincing from his coach before deciding to head to Foro Italico and participate in the pre-qualifying tournament which he won courtesy of three set win over Jannik Sinner.
Basso is ranked 416th in the world according to the ATP rankings, and he will almost certainly be guaranteed the majority of home support on Grandstand court. But the odds are stacked against him.
Cilic v Basso Predictions & Tips
This should be a fairly routine win for Cilic who is in desperate need of match-wins heading to the French Open. His record in Rome is decent and he could not have picked an easier opponent.
Tip: Cilic to win in straight sets: 1/2 (888Sport)
