David Goffin v Juan-Martin Del Potro Head to Head
This will be the fifth head to head match between these ATP Tour veterans and Goffin has the upper hand so far, managing to win three of four previous clashes.
They have even met in the last year’s edition of this tournament and Del Potro has retired while leading 5-4 in the second set, after losing the first one 6-2.
Goffin Is Far From His Best Form
David Goffin has failed to win more than two consecutive matches since the year started and his record of 12/12 at the moment is far from great and certainly not what is expected from the 23rd ranked player.
He has 4-4 on clay so far this year and his victory over Stan Wawrinka here in the opening round was his biggest one of 2019th as Goffin’s three other wins on clay came against players who are ranked outside the top 75.
Del Potro Is Coming Back From An Injury
This will be only the fifth match Del Potro is playing in 2019th as he had a right knee injury which kept him from playing tennis since the Shanghai Masters last October.
He came back on February 20 and played three matches in the Delray Beach ATP tournament, beating Nishioka and Opelka but losing in the quarterfinals to McDonald. After that Delray Beach performance, he re-injured the knee and paused until last Monday, when he lost to Djere in Madrid – 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
It will be interesting to see how good Del Potro can play now and if his knee is ready for serious tennis against an opponent like Goffin.
Goffin v Del Potro Predictions & Tips
Tough to think del Potro can go shot for shot with Goffin at the moment as the Belgian is in a much better physical condition, despite Goffin not being in top form and playing hot-cold since the season started.
That is why I expect Goffin to be victorious as he should be able to move Del Potro from side to side and just torture him with good shot selection, which should be too much for the Argentinean who is far from his physical best.
