Fabio Fognini v Andreas Seppi Head to Head
Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi have met eight times. They are currently tied at 4-4 on head-to-head, but remarkably it is Fognini who has won the last four matches. World No.66 Seppi last beat his countryman in 2010. In their eight meetings, only one match was in a Grand Slam tournament, which happened at the 2017 French Open with Fognini winning in straight sets.
Fognini Will Be A Dark Horse This Fortnight
Fabio Fognini overcame a terrible start to 2019 to become one of the surprise contenders at the French Open this year. Fognini had arrived in Monte Carlo in mid-April in the worst form of his career having suffered five first round exits in the first quarter of the year. Confidence was at all-time low and he was still feeling the effects of elbow and ankle pain.
But during the his one-week stay at the Principality, Fognini fought through adversity. He came back from the dead in his first match in Monte Carlo against Andrey Rublev and he never looked back since then.
The Italian No.1 saw off Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and defending champion Rafael Nadal en route to the final where he beat a surprise finalist Dusan Lajovic to claim his first Masters 1000 title.
Fognini labelled it his best moment of his tennis career and he rose to a career high ranking No.12 (currently No.11). Although his next two clay-court events did not go as planned, he will be expected to have a decent run in Paris where he reached the last eight in 2011.
Seppi Winless in Three Months
Not only is Andreas Seppi coming into this match on the back of an atrocious run of form, but he has not beaten his compatriot in nine years.
Seppi has not won a match since February 20 at the Delray Beach Open. He was beaten by lowly-ranked Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in his last outing at Geneva Open.
Seppi, now ranked at No.66 in the world was backed by his longtime coach Massimo Sartori to overcome his tough spell. However, at the age of 35 with less training on his schedule, Sartori has doubts.
“It’s a tough time but a normal one because he played well at the beginning of the year, then there was a long time where he trained less and won less”, revealed Sartori.
Fognini v Seppi Predictions & Tips
Fognini is odds-on favorite to win here given his strong performances on the European clay swing. He also has a very good record against Seppi winning his last four matches on the trot. This should be banker for the Italian No.1.
Tip: Fognini to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
