Roger Federer v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

The two players have not met on the ATP circuit making Sonego the 334th different opponent for Federer in his career.

Federer Returns to Roland Garros For First Time Since 2015

Roger Federer returns to the French Open for the first time since 2015. Since his injury that made him miss half the season in 2016, the Swiss has played a limited schedule and opted to skip the clay court season in both 2017 and 2018, with an intention to extend his career as much as possible and avoid some of the wear and tear the schedule and clay brings to the body.

Federer stated his intention to play the clay court season earlier this year and participated in both the Madrid and Rome Masters 1000s.

The world number three had some inspiring victories in both, before losing out to Dominic Thiem in Madrid in the quarters and withdrawing with an injured leg after qualifying for the quarter finals in Rome.

The Swiss maestro is believed to be healthy and raring to go in Paris and a favorable draw will help his cause. Federer won his only French Open in 2009.

Can Sonego Trouble the Swiss Maestro?

Italian Lorenzo Sonego has been on the ATP circuit for two years and is still a new name getting accustomed to the demands of the tour. This is his first time playing the French Open as he has never got past the qualifiers before.

Sorengo has performed well on the Challengers and Futures circuits. A clay court specialist, Sorengo was a qualifier at the Monte Carlo ATP Masters 1000 and had a good tournament making it to the quarter finals.

Sonego has broken into the top 100 of the ATP rankings, being ranked as high as 66 last month. He is currently ranked 73rd in the world. With a funky serve, a solid backhand and a good clay court game, Sonego will be looking to challenge his opponents at the French Open.

Federer v Sonego Predictions & Tips

Sonego is a clay court specialist and has performed fairly this clay court season. Federer will be a little tentative at the onset given the long hiatus from the French Open. Expect Federer to get into his groove sooner rather than later as the match progresses and win this in straight sets eventually.

Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 4/5 (888Sport)
