Daniil Medvedev v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head
Medvedev leads the series 1-0 after beating Herbert in their only meeting at the 2019 ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam in a tight three-setter.
Medvedev, Quiet Russian Letting His Tennis Do The Talking
Daniil Medvedev’s remarkable turnaround of his fortunes on clay has been one of the success stories during the early part of 2019.
The Russian arrived in Monte Carlo more than one month ago with only two main draw wins on the dirt. However, he compiled as many wins on the surface this year alone than the entire previous seasons since he turned pro. Medvedev reached the semifinals in the Principality where he beat a red-hot Stefanos Tsitsipas and World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the process.
He then went on to main event the finals in Barcelona, losing to Dominic Thiem.
Despite suffering early exits in the subsequent events in Madrid and Rome, it has still been a productive season for the the man from Moscow. Medvedev will now aim to establish his form on the Parisian clay where he is win-less in his last two visits, losing in the first round in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
But this is a new Medvedev, demonstrating a new level of play of grinding tennis and powerful hitting – something you would not associate for man 6 feet 6 inches tall.
Herbert Will Be Buoyed By Home Support
World No.42 Pierre-Hugues Herbert is not the most technically gifted tennis player, but he is a very efficient server with a remarkable read of the game. The Frenchman has had a very good season by his standards considering he is a double specialist.
He is 17-11 for the season in terms of win-loss, with his best result being a runner-up finish in Montpellier. During that week is southern France, Herbert scored notable victories over the likes of Denis Shapovalov and Tomas Berdych before falling to Tsonga in the final.
Herbert’s season started with a quarterfinal showing in Doha and then made the third round in Australian Open where he stunned NextGen star Hyeon Chung and big serving American Sam Querrey en route to the third round. He reached a career-high ranking of No.36 in the middle of February, but his form slightly dipped during the European clay-court swing and he is now just outside the Top 40.
Can he replicate his French Open exploits from last year and make the second round?
Medvedev v Herbert Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is such an astute tennis player who is always willing to take risks in the middle of rally and take initiative. Herbert has such a very good serve and you would expect him to earn a few cheap points from his serve-volley tactic. But Medvedev is also not a slouch in that department and he complements his serve with a powerful forehand and reliable backhand. There tussle earlier this year was very competitive and we should get a similar one here.
Tip: Medvedev to win in four sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
