Stan Wawrinka v Cristian Garin Head to Head
There is no previous history between Wawrinka and Garin on tour. The Swiss is an experienced former champion at Roland Garros, while Garin is making his main-draw debut this year.
Wawrinka Avoids Another First Round Upset
Stan Wawrinka has triumphed at the French Open before, but he has also been part of a few embarrassing setbacks in the opening round too. The Swiss lost in 2014 and 2017 editions to the same player (Guillermo Garcia-Lopez) and he would have been mightily relieved to have avoided facing the Spaniard yet again.
The former World No.3 overcame a brave resistance from Slovakia’s Jozef Kovalik, the same player he beat en route to the final in 2017. In total, Wawrinka fired 19 aces, saved all three breakpoints he faced, and only dropped the second set on a tiebreaker.
The 34-year-old arrived in Paris on a three-match losing streak, but his general clay-court level improved immensely especially in Madrid where he beat 2019 ATP tour-leader on clay Guido Pella and Kei Nishikori respectively. Whether Wawrinka can continue to surge to the third round is an entirely different question bearing in mind he will face a stern test against in-form Chilean Cristian Garin.
Garin Following The Footsteps Of Marcelo Rios
Chile’s last man to reach the summit of men’s tennis is a certain Marcelo Rios who became World No.1 in 1998. And now 21 years on, a new Chilean is looking to repeat Rios’ heroics. Cristian Garin is one of tennis’ up and coming superstars hailing from Santiago – the same city Rios was born – who has recorded a breakthrough year on tour in 2019.
Garin made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2017. His consistent rise in the rankings has been nothing short of spectacular. After capturing three ATP Challenger titles in 2018, he broke inside the world’s top 100. His fine start to 2019 has been rewarded as he claimed his first ATP tour-level title in Houston in February and then won his second just a few weeks ago in Munich.
If there was a definition of the phrase hardwork pays off, then the young Chilean is a case in point. Garin had won only one tour-level match in 2019, but he has now won an astonishing 20 matches on the clay.
Wawrinka v Garin Predictions & Tips
This will be such a spectacle and one of the pick of second round matches. Garin is an incredibly talented base liner whose positioning and shotmaking are excellent. He will certainly be carrying a lot of momentum in this one given that he won a handful of matches on clay. However, experience should win over youth. The Chilean is still a rookie at this level and he will be playing a proven champion with a point to prove.
Tip: Wawrinka to win: 8/15 (888Sport)
