Fabio Fognini v Federico Delbonis Head to Head
Fabio Fognini and Federico Delbonis have met six times (including Davis Cup). Five of those meetings have been on clay in which the Italian leads 3-2. Fognini also leads in the overall head-to-head 4-2 having triumphed in their only non-clay event (Wimbledon 2016 first round).
Fognini Was Impeccable Against Compatriot Seppi
Despite dropping a set in his routine win over countryman and good friend Andreas Seppi, there was alot to be encouraged by Fabio Fognini’s play at the start of his 2019 French Open campaign.
Fognini is one of the dark horses to win Roland Garros this year, and he was dynamic, agile and aggressive in beating Seppi for the sixth successive match in their head-to-head.
The Italian No.1 won his first Masters 1000 title on clay in Monte Carlo over a month ago, a feat which cemented his status as one of tennis’ best players on clay among the current generation especially when you consider Rafael Nadal’s dominance in the last 15 years. It was Nadal whom Fognini beat en route to the title in the Principality. That win was almost like a second reincarnation for the Italian as he is now a contender in Paris.
Given Fognini’s unpredictability in matches, it is hard to know what state of mind he is usually in while on court.
Can Delbonis Make It Third Time Lucky?
Federico Delbonis is naturally a left hander whose love for the clay is immeasurable. The Argentinian has won his two ATP tour-level titles on clay (Sao Paulo and Marrakesh), and a further 10 clay titles on the Challenger tour. However, he has not been able to make much of an impact during the last couple of seasons dropping even outside the Top 100 during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.
Delbonis is yet to make past the second round at the French Open in his last five visits. He has equaled his best ever appearance at Roland Garros after making the Round of 64 in 2013 and 2018 respectively.
The 28-year-old is on double duty this fortnight with his participation in doubles too with compatriot Guillermo Duran. He won his singles match against Garcia Lopez in four sets
Fognini v Delbonis Predictions & Tips
This will be a real test for Fognini as he is coming up against a very lively clay-court player. The Argentinian has caused him plenty of trouble in their past matches and this almost certainly be the same. Their encounters have been close with only one of their matches ending in straight sets. Expect another long, feisty battle full of power hitting.
