Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head
The two ladies have met each other eight times on the WTA Tour. Svitolina currently leads by 5-2 and has won their last three meetings. They most recently met in the WTA Dubai this season, where the number nine seed won 6-1, 6-2.
An Interesting Start for Svitolina
Elina Svitolina landed her first win on the clay this season in Paris, in what was undoubtedly a dominating performance. She defeated Venus Williams 6-3, 6-3, to stake her claim once again on the tour.
The current WTA Finals champion was then supposed to play her compatriot Kateryna Kozlova, but following her withdrawal from the competition, Svitolina got a walkover. More than that, she got an extra day to rest.
This win comes as a blessing for the 24-year-old, who struggled with a knee injury for a few months. She was out of action for the entire month of April and returned only in the Madrid Open. But owing to a lack of form and momentum, she lost her opening match there. Svitolina later incurred the same feat in Rome too.
There is no telling what Svitolina ca do with some extra time to rest. She came firing on all cylinders against Venus and looks particularly determined to go a long way.
The 2017 Canadian Open winner enjoyed a good start to the year, reaching the semifinal consecutively in Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells.
Muguruza Finds her Footing
After surviving an early scare against Taylor Townsend in the first set, Muguruza delivered a commanding performance against Johanna Larsson. She powered past the Swede with a 6-4, 6-1 win in an hour and four minutes.
Aiming to reach her first Grand Slam final since the 2017 Wimbledon, Muguruza took some time to settle but now, she appears to be right on track.
The season so far has been quite good to the Spaniard, who successfully defended her title in Monterrey and also reached the quarterfinal in Hua Hin and Dubai. As for her run on clay, it was quite disappointing by the 2016 champion although, it was better than Svitolina’s.
It is good to see Muguruza playing some quality tennis again. She has had a lean time on the tour for a while now and is slowly starting to reignite herself.

This is an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. Muguruza will fancy her chances here and look to repeat history once again. Expect this one to be a tight encounter with three sets in the making.
