Roger Federer v Casper Ruud Head to Head
The two players have never met on the ATP circuit. In fact, Ruud is so unknown to Federer that the Swiss even said that he knew more about his father Christian than his next round opponent.
Federer Looking to Continue Strong Start On Clay
Roger Federer’s return to clay has not only gone better than expected thus far, but he actually seems to be enjoying himself as he continues to be surprised by the progress he has made thus far. After heartening performances in Madrid and Rome following a long hiatus from the clay, Federer has returned to Roland Garros amidst raucous welcomes from the crowd. As Federer continues to maintain that his expectation from the clay for himself remain low, his performance thus far has been nothing short of convincing.
The Swiss has had two relatively comfortable straight set victories, albeit against lesser known opponents who have not yet managed to test his preparation for the clay adequately. With a favorable draw, the Swiss will be looking to make it to the second week without many hiccups, before the going gets more challenging and demanding.
Being away from the clay, and spending most of his time on the hard courts and grass since 2016, there is a noticeable change in his game on clay with him taking the ball a lot earlier than before. Federer was the 2009 French Open champion and currently the holder of 20 Grand Slam titles. His next opponent is 20 year old Norwegian Casper Ruud, whose father Christian Ruud was one of Federer’s opponents in the 1999 French Open.
Young Ruud Looking for Dream Come True
20 year old Norwegian Casper Ruud is son of former ATP player Christian Ruud, who was once ranked in the top 40 players on the ATP tour. Ruud has sprung on the circuit in the last 12 months or so and moved up the rankings from out of the top 150 to currently a career high number 63 in the world.
Ruud qualified for a Grand Slam for the first time in the Australian Open in 2018, and at the same time qualified for two ATP challenger finals. His first noteworthy win was against David Ferrer at the Swedish Open last year, followed by more success at the Challenger level. 2019 has seen the Norwegian qualify for the semifinals of the ATP 250 in Brazil, as well as the finals of the clay court ATP 250 in Houston, and reach the round of 32 at the Rome Masters earlier this month.
Ruud’s French Open has thus far got off to a strong start with straight set wins against Latvian veteran Ernst Gulbis and Italian clay court specialist Matteo Berrettini.
Federer v Ruud Predictions & Tips
Ruud has had a breakthrough year or so of sorts and performed well on the clay courts this year too. A strong showing in the first two rounds at the French Open is indicative of the form he is in coming into the match. Being his dream come true to play Roger Federer, one can anticipate excitement and nerves for the Norwegian. Expect Ruud to provide a stiffer challenge to Federer than his earlier round opponents, but at the end of the day, Federer’s experience and variety will be too much for the Norwegian. Federer to win in straight sets.
Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 23/25 (888Sport)
