Juan Martin del Potro v Jordan Thompson Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between these two players.
Thompson, the Sole Australian Remaining In Singles.
Jordan Thompson is the current Australian No.5, but somehow survived the early onslaught to become the sole man from the country down under to stand tall in the singles draw of the 2019 French Open. That in itself will be quite an accomplishment for the Syndey native who will play in his first ever third round match at Roland Garros.
Thompson has a very winnable match against a weary and injured del Potro in the third round, and there is every chance he could make the second week of a major for the first time in his tennis career.
The Australian has since transformed his Challenger exploits to the ATP tour. He began the 2019 season in fine form, reaching the quarterfinals in Sydney, New York and Houston. He benefitted from Auger-Aliassime’s withdrawal and then went on to halt Davidovich Fokina’s run the stand-in lucky loser. Thompson impressively dealt with the big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic in the second round where he never lost serve.
Del Potro Played A Five-Setter, But At What Cost?
Juan Martin Del Potro had his knee taped as he fought back valiantly to beat dimunitive Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in five sets. The sight of Del Potro going through another harrowing experience on his body made almost all tennis fans cringe.
After dropping the first set, his knee was heavily taped (the same knee which brought his 2018 season to a premature end), before embarking on a comeback victory.
The Argentine said: “I slid and I lost my balance, and I hurt my hip, and this also resounded in my knee. I felt a weird feeling, which worried me.”
Del Potro made his return to tennis at the Delray Beach Open and reached the quarterfinals. He failed to defend his Indian Wells crown due to a recurrence of his knee injury and then made his second comeback in Madrid.
Thompson v Del Potro Predictions & Tips
Thompson has a massive opportunity to win here and I don’t think we should term it as an upset if it happens. Del Potro is not feeling 100% and he has only played a few matches in 2019. Thompson’s confidence is sky-high and will be thrilled to have made it this far. A healthy Del Potro would breeze past Thompson without breaking sweat, but his knee is cause for concern and will definitely hamper his agility.
Tip: Thompson to win: 45/17 (888Sport)
